Softball Falls to Buena Vista (Iowa) and Sul Ross State (Texas) on Day 2 of Tucson Invitational Games

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team fell to Buena Vista (Iowa) University by a score of 6-5 and Sul Ross State (Texas) University by a scored of 13-2 in five innings on the second day of the Tucson Invitational Games at Lincoln Park. 

Against Buena Vista, BW (0-4) scored five runs on seven hits as it plated all five runs in the second inning.  Buena Vista scored six runs on 10 hits as it pushed two runs across the plate in the first, third and sixth innings.

At the Plate

  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference right fielder Ashley Matousek (Sagamore Hills/Akron Archbishop Hoban) was 3-for-4 with a run batted-in (RBI) and a career-high two stolen bases.
  • Junior first baseman Raegan Thompson (Mentor), sophomore All-OAC shortstop Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), sophomore centerfielder Lexy Coggins (Vermilion/Firelands) and freshman third baseman Sara Frederickson (Lake Balboa, Calif./Notre Dame) all added a base knock.
  • Thompson had a double, two RBIs and a run scored
  • Mau and Frederickson each had an RBI and run scored 

In the Circle

  • Junior All-OAC right hander Nikki Camarati (Brunswick/Holy Name) suffered the loss as she allowed six runs on 10 hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in 5.2 innings.
  • Junior right hander Hannah Welling (Ravenna) pitched a third of an inning and had one strikeout and one walk

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored two runs on six hits as they plated one run in the first and fourth innings.  Sul Ross scored 13 runs on 15 hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the first, three in the second, six in the third and three in the fifth.

At the Plate

  • Matousek was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI
  • Mau, Frederickson, junior Academic All-OAC second baseman Alicia Saxton (Boardman) and sophomore All-OAC catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) each had a base hit.
  • Saxton had a double and a walk
  • Mau had an RBI and run scored
  • Frederickson had a run scored

In the Circle

  • Welling took the loss as she allowed nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings.
  • Freshman righty Marissa Hall (Paris/East Canton) pitched the final 2.2 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with one strikeout and one walk

BW continues play at the Tucson Invitational Games on Wednesday, March 9 with non-conference games against Sul Ross State and Buena Vista at 12 and 4:30 p.m. respectively.
