Softball Drops Twinbill to Mount Union on Seniors’ Day

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team fell to the University of Mount Union in an Ohio Athletic Conference and Seniors' Day doubleheader on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex.

Mount Union (18-16-1, 8-6-1 OAC) won the first game by a final score of 1-0 and took the night cap by a final score of 10-4

In game one, BW (12-18, 7-7 OAC) was held scoreless on one hit. The Purple Raiders scored one run on four hits as they pushed their lone run across the plate in the first inning.

At the Plate

  • Sophomore center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermillion/Firelands) was 1-for 3
  • Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC designated hitter Ashley Matousek (Sagamore Hills/Akron Archbishop Hoban), junior Academic All-OAC second baseman Alicia Saxton (Boardman) and freshman first baseman Sara Frederickson (Lake Balboa, Calif./Notre Dame) each drew a base on balls.

In the Circle

  • Junior All-OAC right hander Nikki Camarati (Brunswick/Holy Name) took the loss as she allowed one unearned run on four hits with 13 strikeouts and three intentional walks. 

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored four runs on eight hits as it plated one run in the first inning on the solo blast by Matousek, one in the second and two in the third off the first homer of the season for sophomore All-OAC catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark). Mount Union scored 10 runs on 11 hits as it pushed two runs across the plate in the first inning, one in the third, three in the fifth and four in the seventh.

At the Plate

  • Bricker was 2-for-2 with a double, homerun, two runs batted-in (RBIs), two runs scored and a walk.
  • Coggins, Frederickson, Matousek, junior designated player Hannah Welling (Ravenna), sophomore All-OAC shortstop Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) and sophomore third baseman Julia Gersey (Solon) all had a base knock
  • Matousek had a homerun, RBI, run scored and walk
  • Mau had an RBI
  • Welling, who is normally a starting pitcher, got her first collegiate hit and had a walk
  • Coggins and Frederickson each had a walk

In the Circle

  • Freshman right Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) took the loss as she allowed six runs on seven hits with one walk in 4.1 innings pitched.
  • Camarati pitched the final 2.2 innings and allowed four runs on four hits with five strikeouts and an intentional walk 

BW is back in action on Sunday, April 24 when it travels to Ada for a rescheduled OAC doubleheader against Ohio Northern University on the ONU Softball Field at 2 p.m.
