BEREA, Ohio – Junior pitcher Sam Mott (Frewsburg, N.Y./Central) threw her first career no-hitter as the Baldwin Wallace University softball team shut out Hiram College in a pair of rescheduled non-conference games on the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field.
BW (15-18-1) and Hiram (7-23) were originally scheduled to play on March 28 but were postponed on three occasions and switched locations on twice.
The Yellow Jackets won the first game by a final score of 8-0 in six innings and took the second game by a score of 8-0 in five innings.
In game one, BW scored eight runs on 14 hits as it plated two runs in the first innings, one in the second inning, third inning and fifth inning and three runs in the sixth innings. The Terriers were held scoreless and hitless and only three batters reached base on walks.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Mott and sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference shortstop Erica English (North Olmsted) as each went 3-for-4. Mott tied a career-high with three hits and one double and had two runs batted-in (RBIs) with a run scored. English had one RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Hannah Albrecht (Northridge, Calif./Chaminade College Prep) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Alex Kozich (Avon) was 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Four other BW players had a base knock.
In the circle, Mott hurled her first no-hitter in a complete game shutout with four strikeouts and three walks.
In game two, BW scored eight runs on four hits as it plated all eight runs in the first inning. Hiram was held scoreless on three hits.
The Yellow Jackets had four players each record a base knock led by Kozich as he had the game's lone extra base hit with a double. Senior Academic All-OAC left fielder Mackenzie Nelsen (Powell/Dublin Scioto), sophomore third baseman Paige Loveless (Mechanicsburg) and freshman pitcher Nikki Turner (Hudson) picked up the other hits.
In the circle, senior Academic All-OAC pitcher Erica Morgan (Brook Park/Midpark) threw her fourth career shutout as she did not allow a run on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
BW closes out the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, April 22 when it hosts an OAC doubleheader against Capital University on Seniors' and Parents' Day at 1 p.m.
