BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader from rival the University of Mount Union at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field. The Yellow Jackets (12-21, 4-12 OAC) won the first game, 1-0, and captured the nightcap, 2-0.

In the first game, BW scored its only run in the bottom of the first inning when freshman shortstop Alicia Hack (Pickerington/ North) singled, stole second base, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored via a single by All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge).

At the plate, both BW and Mt. Union (11-19, 4-12 OAC) only had two hits each. For BW,  Hack and Lightel had the only base hits. On the mound, sophomore Erica Morgan (Brook Park/ Midpark) started and pitched a complete-game, seven-inning shutout. She allowed two base hits and no runs, struck out seven and walked just one. The shutout was her third this season and she improved to 5-11 overall.

In the second game, BW scored the only runs it needed in the fifth inning when it scored a pair of unearned runs. Sophomore left fielder Mackenzie Nelsen (Powell/ Dublin Scioto) singled, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt, third when Hack singled and scored when Hack stole second and the Purple Raider shortstop threw the ball away. Hack then advanced to third when senior first baseman Mackenzie Brua (Avon) singled to short and then the shortstop threw the ball away a second time.

At the plate, both BW and Mt. Union each had four base hits. Four separate Yellow Jackets each had a hit, including Hack, Lightel, Brua and Nelsen.

On the mound, Morgan started and pitched the first three innings. She was relieved by sophomore Samantha Dostall (Oberlin/ Firelands) who pitched the next three-plus innings to gain the win and improve to 7-10 this season. She allowed two base hits, struck out four and walked one.  In the top of the seventh, Mt. Union placed its first two runners on base. Morgan came back into the game and got three outs and earned her first career.

BW returns to action on Monday, April 20 when the Yellow Jackets host The College of Wooster in a non-conference twinbill at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field at 3:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets end the regular season on Saturday, April 25 with an OAC doubleheader at Muskingum University at 1 p.m.
