Yellow Jackets and Spartans Split Two Eight Inning Softball Games

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team split a pair of thrilling eight inning softball games against Case Western Reserve University in non-conference action at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field.

BW (17-18) and Case (24-12) played seven scoreless innings in the first game before scoring a combined five runs in the eighth.  The Spartans scored two runs on a two out homerun in the top half of the inning.   The Yellow Jackets would score all of their runs with two outs as they plated two the runs when freshman third baseman DJ Rogers (Warren/Champion) reached on a fielding and throwing error by the Case third baseman.  Rogers would score the game winning run on the two-out double by sophomore rightfielder Alison Fiorucci (Seven Hills/Holy Name.).

The Spartans won the nightcap by a final of 4-3 also in eight innings.   The teams again played to a scoreless tie through the first five innings before each scored a run in the sixth.   The Spartans took the early 1-0 lead on a run batted-in (RBI) single before junior first baseman Mackenzie Brua (Avon) blasted her team-leading ninth homerun over the fence.    Case would again take the lead in the top of the seventh before Fiorucci tied the game on her solo blast to right center.   The Spartans would score two in the eighth and Yellow Jackets tacked on a run.

In game one, the BW offense scored three runs on nine hits and was led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference pitcher Tabitha Murray (Mogadore/Field) as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored.   Fiorucci was 2-for-4 with her eighth double of the season and one RBI.  Junior All-OAC second baseman Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge) went 2-for-2.

On the mound, Murray pitched a complete game five hit victory.   She pitched eight innings and allowed two runs (one earned) with one strikeout and one walk.

In game two, the Yellow Jacket offense scored three runs on eight hits and was led by Murray as she went 3-for-4 again with an RBI.  Brua was 2-for-4 with a homer, RBI and run scored.

On the mound, freshman Erica Morgan (Brook Park/Midpark) her second career eight inning game but suffered the loss.   Morgan allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

BW is back in action on Friday, April 25 when it hosts Geneva (Pa.) College in a rescheduled doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.   The Yellow Jackets close out the regular season on Saturday, April 26 when they host Muskingum University in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Seniors' and Parents' Day at 1 p.m.
