ALLIANCE, OHIO  – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at rival the University of Mount Union today. The Yellow Jackets won the opener, 9-7, and the Purple Raiders captured the nightcap, 6-4.

With its split, BW is now 15-16 overall and 9-7 in the OAC. Mt. Union is 14-14-1 overall and 8-8 in the OAC.

In the first game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 1-0 lead with two runs in the top of the second inning, but the Purple Raiders came back to tie it at 2-2 with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. BW gained control and took a 9-2 advantage with a five-run sixth and two more in the top of the seventh inning. But Mt. Union made it interesting with a five-run bottom of the seventh and ended the frame with two runners on base.

Junior first baseman Mackenzie Brua (Avon) and senior All-OAC shortstop Lauren Feciuch (Kent/ Field) led the BW hitters as each  one hit a homerun and combined to drive in four runs. Brua was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a two-run homer. Feciuch was 1-for 4 with a run scored and a homer. In addition, senior All-OAC designated hitter Nikki Peskura (Strongsville) and freshmen DJ Rogers (Warren/ Champion) and Sydney Kimball (Brecksville/ Brecksville-Broadview Heights) each had two hits.  Peskura and Kimball each scored a pair of runs and Rogers scored once.

On the mound, senior All-OAC standout Tabitha Murray (Mogadore/ Field) started and pitched all seven innings to gain the victory and improve to 4-6 this season. She allowed 11 base hits and six runs (six earned), struck out five Purple Raider batters and walked two.

In the nightcap, the Purple Raiders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and BW tied it with a run of its own in the top of the second.  The Yellow Jackets gained a 2-1 lead with a run in the third, but Mt. Union tied it at 2-2 in the bottom half of the frame and took a 4-2 advantage with two runs in the fourth. The Raiders extended their lead to 6-2 with two more in the fifth. BW cut the deficit to 6-4 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but that was as close as the Jackets would get to the Purple Raiders.

The BW hitters were led by junior All-OAC second baseman Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge) who was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

On the mound, freshman Erica Morgan (Brook Park/ Middleburg Heights Midpark) started and pitched six innings and dropped to 7-4 this season. She allowed nine base hits and six runs (all earned), struck out seven Mt. Union batters and walked one.

BW is back in action tomorrow, Saturday, April 18 when the Yellow Jackets travel to Bethany, West Virginia to play a non-league doubleheder against Bethany College at 1:00 p.m.
