Softball Team Loses Twice at ONU

ADA, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Saturday, April 21, 2012) to first place Ohio Northern University. The Polar Bears won the first game, 6-3, and captured the nightcap, 4-1.

With its losses, the Yellow Jackets are now 17-17 overall and 5-9 in the OAC while ONU improved to 21-7 overall and 12-2 in the OAC.


In the first game, ONU jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. B-W closed to 2-1 with a run in the top of the fourth when junior rightfielder Alyssa Brown (Hudson) singled, moved to third via a Polar Bear error and scored when senior second baseman Katie Finley (Vermilion) singled.

ONU increased its lead to 4-1 with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Yellow Jackets then came right back with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth as sophomore pitcherTabitha Murray (Mogadore) blasted her third homerun of the season for the first run.  Brown then singled. Freshman utility player Mackenzie Brua (Avon) pinch ran for Brown and moved to second on a ground out and scored on a single by senior designated hitterSarah Baker (Mentor/ Lake Catholic). Undaunted, ONU regained its three-run lead with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the scoring.


The hitting attack was led by Murray with three hits, including her homer, and both  Brown and sophomore centerfielder Nikki Peskura (Strongsville) each had a pair. On the mound, Murray started and pitched six innings but suffered the loss to fall to 6-7 this season. She allowed seven hits, six runs (five earned), struck out one and walked three.

In the second game, ONU jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the second inning. B-W cut the lead to 2-1 when Baker singled, advanced to second via a sacrifice bunt, to third when sophomore pitcher Justina Wise (New London) had an infield single to third base and scored when the ONU third baseman threw the ball away trying to get Wise at first. ONU added its final two runs in the fifth.

At the plate, three separate Yellow Jackets had hits. On the mound, Wise started and took the loss to fall to 4-7 overall. She allowed 10 hits and four runs (all earned).


The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Monday, April 23 when they travel to Wooster, Ohio to play The College of Wooster in a non-league doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. The final home doubleheader is on Wednesday, April 25 when the Yellow Jackets host OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University on Seniors' and Parents' Day at 3:30 p.m.
