BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team opened the 2010 season today (Sunday, March 7) with a pair of losses at the annual Tucson Invitational in Tucson, Arizona. The Yellow Jackets play eight more games in four days.
In the first game, B-W lost to the number-14-ranked team in NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics), Maddona (Mich.) University, 3-2, and then lost a rain-shortened game to Peru State (Neb.), 10-9, in game that was called due to the weather in the sixth inning.
Versus Madonna, now 3-0 overall, sophomore pitcher Sarah Baker (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) threw six innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits and struck out three. At the plate, sophomore outfielder Meredith Fogg (Sandusky/Senior) was 1-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt and a run batted-in. Senior outfielder Chelsea Saunders (Medina/Highland) was 1-for-4 and drove in the other B-W run.
Versus Peru State, junior pitcher Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/ Senior) went the first 2.2 innings in the losing effort.
At the plate, senior outfielder Mallory Kobak (Independence) was 3-for-4 with two stolen bases. Fogg was 2-for-3 and senior third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/Keystone) had a three RBI double.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow, Monday, March 8 when they play Calumet College of St. Joseph's (Ind.) at 12:30 p.m. MT and then face Viterbo (Wisc.) University at 2:30 p.m. MT. On Tuesday, March 9, BW plays Northwestern (Iowa) College at 8:00 a.m. MT and then faces the College of St. Mary's (Neb.) at 10:00 a.m. MT.
