Yellow Jacket Softball Team Sweeps Allegheny (Pa.); Davis Breaks B-W Career Doubles Record

BEREA, OHIO-- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with Allegheny (Pa.) College this afternoon (Sunday, April 18, 2010) at Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea. The Yellow Jackets won the opener, 7-2, and the nightcap, 12-0 in five innings. Junior catcher Tanya Davis (Hinckley/Medina Highland) doubled in game one to break the school career-record.

With the sweep, the Jackets improve to 16-13 overall and are back in action tomorrow with another non-league twinbill versus Ursuline College at 3:30 p.m. in Berea. Allegheny drops to 8-17 overall.

In game one, Allegheny took advantage of an error and a wild pitch to score twice in the third inning. The Yellow Jackets answered with four runs in the fourth on four doubles and a sacrifice fly. Davis led off with her school-record 42nd career double then scored on a two-bagger by senior third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/Keystone). Sophomore pitcher Sarah Baker (Mentor/Lake Catholic) doubled home Coyne then scored on B-W's fourth double of the inning by sophomore second baseman Katie Finley (Vermilion). After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Finley came home on a sac fly by sophomore outfielder Meredith Fogg (Sandusky/Senior).

B-W then added three more in the fifth when Coyne blasted a three-run homerun to plate Davis and senior shortstop Mallory Kobak (Independence).
 
On the mound, Baker tossed six innings to improve to 13-7 for the season. She allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk and struck out five. Junior Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/Senior) pitched a scoreless seven in relief.
 
At the plate, Coyne was 2-for-3 with her fifth homerun, four runs batted-in and two runs scored. Baker also was 2-for-3.
 
In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored first when Kobak singled, stole a base and scored on an infield hit by Davis in the first. In the second inning, B-W added three more with RBI singles by Kobak and Davis and a sac fly by junior first baseman Katrina Resek (Strongsville).
 
The Yellow Jackets then blew the game open with seven runs in the third inning. Key hits included a two-run double by Resek another two-run homerun by Coyne.
 
For the game, the Yellow Jackets recorded 14 base hits. Kobak was 3-for-4, Davis was 2-for-2 with three RBI, Coyne was 2-for-3 with two RBI, senior outfielder Chelsea Saunders (Medina/Highland) was 2-for-3, and Resek was 1-for-3 with three RBI.
 
On the mound, Baker started and pitched three innings to improve to 14-7. She allowed only one hit and struck out one without walking a batter. Rohrbacher  pitched the final two innings and struck out a pair.
Following tomorrow's DH with Ursuline, the Jackets play for the fourth consecutive day with a twinbill at Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg University at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20 in Tiffin.
