Men’s Volleyball Defeats the Wabash (Ind.) Little Giants in Straight Sets

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's volleyball team faced Wabash (Ind.) College in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League matchup on the Chadwick Court. The Yellow Jackets earn their second sweep of the weekend, defeating the Little Giants by finals set scores of 25-16, 25-15, and 25-19.

BW (23-7, 6-1 MCVL) was led by sophomore right side hitter Michael Devlin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) as he totaled a match-high 16 kills, hitting .444, and four blocks. Freshman middle hitter Colby Whiteside (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) notched seven kills, hitting .455 on the day, and added three blocks. Junior setter Brandon Long (Hinckley/Metea Valley, Ill.) dished out 40 assists. Junior outside hitter Nick Irelan (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) added seven kills and led the team with seven digs.

Wabash (8-18, 0-6 MCVL) was led by freshman middle hitter Patrick Volk as he led the team with six kills while junior outside hitter Luke Davis tallied five digs and three kills.

1st Set

  • After being just one point up at 8-7, the Yellow Jackets surged to go on a 6-1 run, forcing a Wabash timeout (14-8 BW)
  • Four straight points for the Yellow Jackets put BW up 19-11 late in the first, forcing Wabash to its second timeout
  • An ace by Whiteside earned BW the 23-13 lead and the Yellow Jackets went on to claim the 25-16 first set win

2nd Set

  • With BW just up 7-6, the Yellow Jackets scored four straight with two kills by Devlin and back-to-back aces by Whiteside to go up 11-6 and force the Wabash timeout
  • Keeping the lead at five, two straight points off kills by Devlin, BW grabbed the late 18-11 advantage
  • Up 20-14, BW kept applying the pressure, tallying four straight points
  • BW closed set two with a kill by freshman middle hitter Josh Steinitz (Towson, Md./Friends School of Baltimore), 25-15

3rd Set

  • Set three featured a lot of back-and-forth play before the Yellow Jackets created some space, going up 15-11, after three straight points (a block by Whiteside/junior All-MCVL outside hitter Michael Beard (Hilliard/Darby) and two kills by Whiteside)
  • A kill by Irelan followed up with a service ace by Irelan put BW up 23-16 late
  • The Yellow Jackets went on to claim the set (25-19) and the match (3-0)

The Yellow Jackets return to play on Thursday, April 6 as the team hosts Trine (Ind.) University for the MCVL regular season finale. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside of the Lou Higgins Center.
