Men’s Volleyball Drops Road Conference Game to Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's volleyball team dropped a road MCVL game to the University of Mount Union in three sets. The Yellow Jackets fell by scores of 25-18, 25-15, 25-13 inside the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

BW (7-15, 2-3 MCVL) was led by sophomore All-MCVL outside hitter Michael Beard (Hilliard/Darby) with seven kills and seven digs. Freshman outside hitter Carson Junker (Massillon/Jackson) added seven kills (.417) and one assist. Sophomore setter Brandon Long (Hinckley/Metea Valley (Ill.) had 12 assists and three digs.

Mount Union (7-8, 5-0 MCVL) was led by Sam Matonis with 11 kills. Luke Trezeciak added nine kills and two assists. Will Heney had one kills, 24 assists, and six digs.

1st Set

  • The match started out highly contested as the Purple Raiders scored first but the teams went back and forth up until 8-8
  • Mount Union gained the lead with a 3-0 run
  • BW continued to battle and cut the Purple Raiders lead to one point with a 2-0 run
  • Mount Union had a final 3-0 run to jump ahead and the Purple Raiders never looked back with an seven-point lead to end the set

2nd Set

  • The Purple Raiders got a big advantage with a 12-2 run to start set
  • The Yellow Jackets battled back with a 3-0 run of their own
  • A 4-2 run at the end of the set gave Mount Union the set win, 25-15

3rd Set

  • BW kept the third set close to start
  • A 4-0 run by the Yellow Jackets gave them a 10-9 lead
  • A 16-3 run to closed the set (25-13) and match (3-0) as Mount Union claimed the victory

The Yellow Jackets hit .022 as a team with 23 errors compared to the Purple Raiders hitting .386 and limiting their errors to just 10. Mount Union put up big blocks, causing those BW hitting errors, as the Purple Raiders combined for 14 total blocks to the Yellow Jackets two.

BW returns to the court on Wednesday, March 23rd when the team hosts a conference game against Hiram College at 7:00 p.m. in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
