Men's Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season with Fifth Place Finish

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's track and field team opened the outdoor portion of the schedule at the Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology Early Bird Meet at the William Welch Athletic Complex.

The Yellow Jacket men were fifth of 10 teams with 61 points while Rose-Hulman placed first with 269 points.

In the field, sophomore All-OAC thrower Ted Achladis won both the discus throw and the shot put with career-best tosses of 159'0" and 52'9.25", respectively. Freshman thrower Patrick Coughlin (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) and senior thrower Travis Giardina (Wampum, Pa./Mohawk Area) placed sixth and seventh in the shot put with marks of 42'11" and 42'7", respectively, marking a career-best shot put toss for Giardina. The senior also finished fifth in the hammer throw with a career-best mark of 146'5".  Freshman jumper Alex Dempsey (Madison) took third in the long jump with a leap of 20'4.5" while freshman sprinter/jumper Peter Rosado (Haydenville/Logan) placed fifth in the triple jump with a 38'9.5" mark.

Freshman distance runner Josh Hickmott (Clay, N.Y./Liverpool) had the best result on the track as he was the runner-up in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:00.54. Sophomore hurdler Robby Becker (South Amherst/Firelands) finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.27 seconds. Junior sprinter Brandon Cole (Vermillion) took eighth in his first collegiate 400-meter dash race in 51.86 seconds.

BW will be back in action next weekend when the throwers will compete in the Amy Adams Memorial Invitational, hosted by Muskingum University March 23-24, while the rest of the team will compete in the Goucher T&F Classic at Gopher Stadium in Towson, Maryland on Saturday, March 24.
