Men’s Tennis Defeats Grove City (Pa.) to Open 2016-17 Campaign

NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team opened the 2016-17 season with a 9-0 shutout victory against Grove City (Pa.) College inside the North Ridge Tennis and Golf Club.

The match was originally scheduled to be played outdoors this morning on the Pop Collins Tennis Courts on the BW campus but was moved indoors due to inclement weather. 

The Yellow Jackets (1-0) won all three doubles matches against the Wolverines (0-1).  The number one tandem of sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference player Dominic Polifrone (Hudson) and sophomore Matt Harris (Akron/Revere) won their first match as teammates by a score of 8-5.   Seniors Nathan Katz (Upper Arlington/Bexley) and Jake Liebler (Medina) earned the win at second doubles by a score of 8-2.  Senior Brian Carano (Akron/Revere) and freshman Jake Elbin (Findlay) picked up the victory at third doubles by a score of 8-2.

BW won all six singles matches to secure the win.  Polifrone won at first singles by identical scores of 6-0.  Katz earned the win at second singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-1.  Liebler took third singles by scores of 6-0 and 6-3.  Carano picked up the win at fourth singles by identical scores of 6-0.  Harris won at fifth singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-1.  Elbin earned his first collegiate win at sixth singles by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. 

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on September 16-19 when they travel to nearby Oberlin to compete in the Oberlin College Invitational on the Don Hunsinger Tennis Courts.  BW closes out the fall portion of its schedule on September 23-25 when it travels to Kalamazoo, Michigan to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships hosted by Kalamazoo College.
