Men’s Swimming and Diving Defeats Wilmington in OAC and Season Opener

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's swimming and diving team opened the 2023-24 season as it defeated Wilmington College in an Ohio Athletic Conference dual meet by a final score of 118-83 in the BW Natatorium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (1-0, 1-0 OAC) captured seven of 11 individual events and won one of two relays.  Wilmington (0-1, 0-1 OAC) won four events and one relay 

Individuals

  • Junior All-OAC stroker Tommie McQueary (Batavia/Bethel Tate) won the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley in times of 53.06 and 2:02.06
  • Junior freestyler Gannon Mellett (Pittsburg, Pa./Moon Area) won the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyles in a time of 5:14.17 and 11:09.13
  • Junior diver Ethan Morrison (Conneaut) captured the 1-meter 5-dive and 6-dive events with scores of 119.1 and 161.0
  • Junior Austin Kingsley (Northport, N.Y.) won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 54.28 and finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:49.26
  • Senior Academic All-OAC stroker Mason Kooyman (Concord Township/Chardon) was second in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles in a time of 22.06 and 49.81
  • Junior Jason Tafoya (El Paso, Texas) took second in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:06.18

Relays

  • The 200-yard medley relay team of Kingsley, Tafoya, McQueary and Kooyman won in a time of 1:39.91
  • The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Mellett, junior stroker Luke Minick (Stow/Archbishop Hoban), junior stroker Gavin Skwirut (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and junior freestyler Will Bolin (Mansfield/Ontario) finished second in a time of 1:32.23

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday, October 20 when they host a non-conference dual meet against NCAA Division II Notre Dame College at 6 p.m.
