Men's Swimming and Diving Places Sixth at Blue Devil Invitational

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's swimming and diving teams placed sixth at the three-day Blue Devil Invitational hosted by Fredonia State University in the Steele Hall Natatorium. 

BW finished sixth of nine teams with 316 points. Allegheny (Pa.) College was the champion with 638 points. 

The Yellow Jackets were led by junior All-American Tyler Thompson (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) as he won the 100-yard breaststroke and was ninth in the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard breaststroke.  Thompson posted season-best times of 57.16 seconds in the 100-breast, 2:01.32 in the 200-IM and 2:13.95 in the 200-breast.

In addition, freshman freestyler Greg Shaw (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) was second in the 100-yard butterfly as well as ninth in the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard butterfly.  Shaw had a time of 52.37 in the 100-fly and posted career-best times of 22.49 in the 50-free and 2:03.75 in the 200-fly. Senior All-OAC performer Jacob Burk (Bowling Green) was third in the 1,650-yard freestyle, sixth in the 400-yard individual medley and 10th in the 500-yard freestyle.  Burk recorded season-best times of 17:17.72 in the 1,650-free, 4:25.53 in the 400-IM and 4:58.85 in the 500-free.  Freshman freestyler Matthew Bartek (Amherst/Marion Steele) was fifth in the 200-yard backstroke and the 100-yard backstroke.  Bartek posted career-best times of 1:59.84 in the 200-back and 56.22 in the 100-back.

In relay action, the 200-yard freestyle team of Thompson, freshman freestyler Austin Lockhart (Olmsted Falls), sophomore freestyler Tyler Allison (Napoleon) and Shaw placed seventh in a season-best time of 1:31.96. The 200-yard medley relay squad of Bartek, Thompson, Shaw and Allison finished fourth in a season-best time of 1:38.95. The 400-yard medley relay unit of Bartek, Thompson, Shaw and Allison took sixth in a season-best time of 3:41.68. The 400-yard freestyle unit of Shaw, Allison, Lockhart and Thompson finished eighth in a season-best time of 3:21.54. The 800-yard freestyle team of Bartek, Burk, Lockhart and sophomore freestyler Kevin Hartenstein (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) placed ninth in a season-best time of 7:43.40.

BW returns to action on Friday, January 6, 2017 when it hosts a non-conference dual meet against Widener (Pa.) University as part of its annual winter training session in Florida at the Sarasota, Florida YMCA at 3 p.m.
