DANVILLE, Ky. – An early goal gave the Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team momentum as it shut out Spalding (Ky.) University 2-0 for the season's first win.

BW (1-3) gained possession early in the game and immediately went on the attack, taking two corner kicks and one shot in the first six minutes. Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Danny Ruple (Berea/Berea-Midpark) stole a goal kick in the seventh minute and passed it up the field to junior forward Logan Davis (Hinckley/Medina Highland) who sunk it deep into the net for his first goal of the season.

Two minutes later, Davis followed up his goal with a strong header off a cross from sophomore defender Jake Woodruff (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Dublin) but Spalding's freshman goalkeeper Nick Lucas did not let that ball cross the goal line. Meanwhile, BW's back line, led by junior defender JT Taubeneck (Parma/Normandy), held Spalding (1-3) to only four shots in the first half and eight total shots on the night.

In the 51st minute, Ruple took and sunk a penalty kick to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 advantage, which they did not relinquish.

BW continued to get good looks on offense in the second half as Ruple got off a pass to freshman midfielder Bryce Posner (Aurora) who took aim at one of the upper corners of the goal that is difficult for the goalie to defend and missed wide.

Depth was a key as the Yellow Jackets led the Golden Eagles in shots taken (10-8) and shots on goal (5-1) while Spalding held the advantage in saves (3-1). Sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Mehal (Richfield/Revere) only made one save due to the strong performance of his defense and recorded his fourth career shutout.

For their efforts over the weekend, Taubeneck and Davis were named to the 28th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic All-Tournament team.

After taking part in two tournaments to open the season, the Yellow Jackets will host non-conference foe Allegheny (Pa.) College in the team's home opener on Tuesday, September 12, at 7 p.m. inside George Finnie Stadium.
