Men's Soccer Team Dominates, But Only Beats McDaniel (Md.), 2-0, in First Round at PSU-Behrend

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team dominated and defeated McDaniel (Md.) College, 2-0, today (Saturday, September 4, 2010) in the first round of the annual Herb Lauffler Memorial Tournament at Penn State Behrend University in Erie, Pennsylvania. The Yellow Jackets will play the host school in tomorrow's championship game at 4:00 p.m.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets are now 2-0 overall and have not allowed a goal in either game. With its loss, McDaniel is 0-1. B-W dominated play by outshooting the Green Terror, 32-5, and outcornered them, 6-2.


B-W opened the scoring at the 35:18 mark mark when senior 2-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/ Senior) scored via an assist from junior Academic All-OAC midfielder Jeff Grater (Stow-Stow-Munroe Falls). The game remained 1-0 in favor of BW at the intermission, despite the fact that BW held a 17-1 first half shooting advantage.


In the second half, B-W kept up the pressure and it finally paid off as senior forward Tyler Leister (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) scored via a header at the 77:32 mark wit the assist going to junior Sean Maloney (North Versailles, Pa./ East Allegheny). It was the first assist for Maloney as a Yellow Jacket.


In net for B-W, sophomore Ryan Hulings (Centerville) started and played 90 minutes and made three saves.


Following tomorrow's championship game, B-W next plays on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at traditional rival Oberlin College in a men's and women's doubleheader. The women play at 5:00 p.m. and the men at 7:00 p.m. Next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11, the B-W men and women travel to Fredonia, New York to play in the SUNY-FRedonia Classic. B-W plays the host school on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and then plays Buffalo State (N.Y.) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.


The first Yellow Jacket home games are a women's and men's doubleheader on Saturday, Sept. 18 against Grove City (Pa.) College at 4:30 and 7:00 p.m., respectively. The matches are played on Tressel Field in The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.
