Men's Soccer Team Loses to Host Penn State Behrend, 2-1, in Championship Match

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team lost to host Penn State Behrend, 2-1, today (Sunday, September 5, 2010) in the championship match of the annual Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament at PSB in Erie, Pennsylvania.

With the loss, the Yellow Jackets are now 2-1 overall and have only allowed two goals in three matches this season. With its win, the Lions are now 2-0-1.  Despite the loss, B-W dominated play by out-shooting the Lions, 17-7, and outcornering them, 8-1.


Penn State-Behrend opened the scoring 30 seconds into the match when senior forward Jerry Tortella scored his first goal of the season via an assist from senior midfielder Brian Bodnar.  The Lions increased their lead to 2-0 on a penalty kick by senior MF Joshua Teti at the 3:01 mark.  The score remained that way at the intermission.


In the second half, B-W kept up the pressure and it finally paid off as senior forward Tyler Leister (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) scored via an assist from senior midfielder Jeff Bonezzi (Medina), but that was as close as the Jackets would get.


In net for B-W, sophomore Ryan Hulings (Centerville) started and played 90 minutes and made one save.


B-W next plays on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at traditional rival Oberlin College in a men's and women's doubleheader. The women play at 5:00 p.m. and the men at 7:00 p.m. Next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11, the B-W men and women travel to Fredonia, New York to play in the SUNY-Fredonia Classic. BW plays the host school on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and then plays Buffalo State (N.Y.) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.


The first Yellow Jacket home games are a women's and men's doubleheader on Saturday, Sept. 18 against Grove City (Pa.) College at 4:30 and 7:00 p.m., respectively.  The matches are played on Tressel Field in The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.
