Steinwachs’ Late Goal Propels Men’s Lacrosse to OAC Victory Over Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio – Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference attack Chad Steinwachs (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) scored the game-winning man-up goal with less than two minutes remaining to propel the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse to a 15-14 OAC victory over Capital University on Purmort Field inside Bernlohr Stadium. 

BW (8-2, 4-0 OAC) held a 5-4 advantage after the first quarter.  Capital (5-5, 1-2 OAC) scored the first two goals of the second quarter but the Yellow Jackets scored the final two to lead 7-6 at halftime.    The Crusaders outscored BW by a margin of 6-3 to lead 12-10 after three stanzas.  The Yellow Jackets outscored Capital by a margin of 5-2 in the final quarter to earn the 15-14 victory.

BW was led by senior All-OAC attack Brock Riemenschneider (Rocky River) and Steinwachs.  Riemenschneider scored four goals while Steinwachs scored three goals and added an assist.  Senior Academic All-OAC midfielder Alex Binner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) netted three goals.  Senior All-OAC midfielder Matt McDowell (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) chipped in a goal and a career-high tying three assists.  Senior All-OAC midfielder Derek Andrews (Alden, N.Y./Iroquois) contributed a goal and two assists.

The Crusaders were led by senior All-OAC attack Brennan O'Callaghan as he scored a game-high five goals.  Junior Academic All-OAC midfielder Barrett Naugle tallied three goals and one assist.  Senior midfielder Carson Paull contributed two goals. 

In net for the Yellow Jackets, senior All-OAC goalie Mike Dizonno (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) won his eighth game of the season, made a career-high 19 saves and allowed 14 goals in 60 minutes of action.

Capital opened the game's scoring when senior All-OAC midfielder Nick Bonsignore found the back of the cage just 18 seconds into the first quarter.  The Yellow Jackets responded with three unanswered goals from sophomore midfielder Ben Kubiak (Wooster), Steinwachs at Riemenschneider with the last coming from Riemenschneider at the 9:57 mark.  The Crusaders used a 2-0 run to tie the game at 3-3 when O'Callaghan scored the unassisted goal at 5:55. BW regained the lead when Riemenschneider found the back of the cage off the assist from senior All-OAC midfielder Derek Andrews (Alden, N.Y./Iroquois) at the 5:08 mark. Capital tied the game at 4-4 on the score from Johnathan Mundell at 4:03.  The Yellow Jackets closed out the scoring when senior midfielder Alex Juhasz (Lancaster, N.Y/Central) scored his first goal of the season and just the second of his career with 2:57 remaining.

The Crusaders opened the second quarter on a 2-0 run to take a 6-5 lead when Barrett Naugle scored at the 10:19 mark. BW used a 2-0 run to take a 7-6 lead when it got scores from Binner and senior All-OAC midfielder Matt McDowell (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) with 1:25 remaining in the opening half. 

Capital opened the second half scoring when they came out on a 2-0 run to take an 8-7 lead off goals from senior midfielder Teddy Crites and Paull with the last coming at the 13:24 mark.  The Yellow Jackets tied game at 8-8 on Riemenschneider's third goal of the game at 12:08. Capital regained the lead at 9-8 when O'Callaghan netted his third goal of the contest at the 9:40 mark. BW again tied things up at 9-9 on the second goal of the game for Binner at 8:13. The Crusaders went on a 3-0 run to push their lead to 12-9 as they got two goals from Naugle and one from O'Callaghan with the last coming from Naugle at the 4:37 mark. The Yellow Jackets closed out the third period scoring at 12-10 when Andrews scored the unassisted goal at 3:59.

BW opened the final quarter scoring as it used a 3-0 run to take a 13-12 lead on goals from Binner, junior All-OAC attack Mike Nanosky (Medina) and Steinwachs with the last coming at the 9:50 mark. The Crusaders went on a 2-0 run to take 14-13 lead when O'Callaghan found the back of the cage at 6:37. The Yellow Jackets scored the final two goals of the game including the game-winner from Steinwachs with 1:45 remaining.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, April 11 when it travels to University Heights for an OAC game against crosstown rival and defending OAC Champion John Carroll University on Wasmer Field inside Don Shula Stadium at 7 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets return home on Saturday, April 14 when they host an OAC and Seniors' and Parents' Day game against Ohio Northern University on the Tressel Field inside the George Finnie Stadium at 1 p.m.
