Carson’s Career Day Leads BW Men’s Lacrosse Past Calvin (Mich.)

CALVIN, Michigan – Sophomore attack Vinny Carson (Cleveland/Benedictine) scored a career-high five goals and had a game-best six assists as the Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team snapped a two–game losing streak as it defeated Calvin (Mich.) College, 17-9, in a non-conference game at Memorial Field.

In addition to Carson for the Yellow Jackets (5-3) freshman attack Devon Henry (Avon Lake) tallied four goals and added one assist.  Freshman midfielder Shane Rakich (Dublin/Olentangy Liberty) contributed three goals and had one assist. Tim Marco led the Knights (2-7) as he scored six of the nine goals.

BW opened the scoring at the 13:25 mark when Jarrod Gilliam (Lewis Center/Olentangy Liberty) scored the goal off the assist from Vinny Carson (Cleveland/Benedictine).  Calvin tied the game up at 1-1 on the goal by Tim Marco.  The Yellow Jackets ended the period on a 3-0 run, including getting two scores from Shane Rakich to lead 4-1 after the opening period.

The Yellow Jackets pushed their lead to 5-1 on the unassisted goal from Carson just 33 seconds into the second period. The Knights responded with four answered goals to tie the game at 5-5 when Marco scored his second goal at the 4:18 mark. BW closed out the half by scoring three unanswered goals by Henry to lead 8-5 at the intermission.

The Yellow Jackets extended their unanswered goal streak to seven straight in the third period and pushed their lead to 12-5 when Henry found the back of the net off the assist from senior midfielder Jake Opincar (Middleburg Heights/Padua Franciscan) with 4:00 left to play.  Calvin cut the lead down to 12-7 as it scored two goals in the final 29 second, including a goal from Marco with one second left

BW got four goals from Carson to open the fourth and final period to extend the lead to 16-7 at the 8:06 mark. The Knights scored outscored the Yellow Jackets by a count of 2-1 down the stretch.

In goal, sophomore Jake Harders (Rocky River/St. Edward) played all 60 minutes, faced 29 shots, allowed eight goals and made eight saves as he improved to 5-3 overall.

BW is back in action on Monday, April 7 when it travels to Steubenville, Ohio to play Franciscan University in a rescheduled non-conference game at 4:00 p.m. BW also plays its first-ever Ohio Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game on Saturday, April 12 at Wilmington College at 1:00 p.m. The next home game is on Wednesday, April 16 when BW hosts Otterbein University in an OAC game on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
