Men's Basketball's Big Second Half Falls Short Against Capital

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team was defeated in the final seconds of an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup against Capital University by a score of 84-81 in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW Leaders (5-14, 2-10 OAC)

  • Sophomore guard Ray Ellington (Westlake) returned to form with a game-high 24 points including a 55% shooting percentage from three
  • Freshman forward Andrew Griffith (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) scored a career-high 13 points in his first collegiate start for the Brown and Gold
  • Freshman forward AJ Pestello (Cuyahoga Falls/Stow-Munroe Falls) was also in double figures as he scored 11 points and led the team with six rebounds
  • Sophomore guard Myles Reynolds (Cleveland/St. Edward) contributed 10 points and dished out a team-high four assists

Capital Leaders (12-7, 5-14 OAC)

  • Senior forward Nate Gerber finished with 10 points and seven rebounds
  • Junior guard Dom Moegerle led the Comets with 17 points
  • Freshman forward Baden Forup posted an additional 14 points and four rebounds

First Half (Capital, 42-39)

  • Reynolds scored all 10 of his points for the Jackets
  • Pestello grabbed four of his six rebounds
  • Senior Academic All-OAC guard Luke Driscoll (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) had two steals leading to the Yellow Jackets' nine points off turnovers
  • Reynolds drilled a three to tie things up at 39 just before the half
  • Capital shot 60% from the floor and 57% from deep but took only a three-point lead into the half

Second Half (Capital, 84-81)

  • Griffith scored 10 of his 13 on the day and gave BW the lead a minute into the half with a three
  • The Yellow Jackets took their biggest lead of the day of seven points at the 3:39 mark
  • Ellington hit the go-ahead bucket with 39 seconds left to play
  • The Comets took a one-point lead after a pair of late free-throws
  • A late attempt by Ellington wouldn't go as Capital sealed the game with a layup in transition 

The Yellow Jackets return to the hardwood on Wednesday, January 31 as they travel to University Heights for an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup against cross-town rival No. 2 nationally ranked John Carroll University on Mike Moran Court in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 7 p.m.
