Men’s Basketball Falls to Benedictine (Ill.) in Final Day of Great Lakes Invitational

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball fell to Benedictine (Ill.) University in a non-conference game by a final score of 87-70 in the final day of the Great Lakes Invitational hosted by Wabash (Ind.) College on the Chadwick Court.

BW Leaders (1-2)

  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) led the way with 21 points and six rebounds.
  • Junior Academic All-OAC guard Luke Driscoll (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) add 12 points on 6-6 shooting.
  • Sophomore forward Zoltan Nagy (Lakewood/St. Edward) led the defense with two blocks. 

Benedictine Leaders (1-3)

  • Trevior Montiel led with 27 points.
  • Nick Kosich posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Andrew Stokes scored 14 points off the bench.

First Half (44-26, Benedictine)

  • The Eagles took an early 7-4 lead in the first five minutes of the half.
  • Benedictine extended their lead to 17-9, however, a quick 7-0 run by BW closed the gap to 17-16 with 10:48 left in the half.
  • An 18-0 run by the Eagles over seven minutes of action gave them a commanding lead with 3:52 left in the half.
  • Junior forward Rob Watson III (Sagamore Hills/Nordonia) ended the run with a jump shot off a sophomore guard Ashton Price (Bay Village/Bay) assist.
  • Back-to-back threes by Mazzeo cut the Benedictine lead down to 39-24.
  • At the half, the Yellow Jackets trailed 44-26.
  • Mazzeo led BW with nine points
  • Driscoll followed that up with eight first half points.
  • The Yellow Jacket defense forced five turnovers.
  • Montiel scored 19 points in the half.

Second Half (87-70, Benedictine)

  • Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Jake Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) scored five early points as BW came out on a 7-2 run.
  • The teams traded a few baskets before the Eagles went an 8-0 run with 14:44 left in the half.
  • The teams continued to trade baskets as Benedictine carried the lead throughout at the half and walked away with the victory.
  • Mazzeo led BW with 12 points.
  • Snyder scored 11 second half points.
  • The Eagles had three players score eight points in the half. 

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, November 22 when they travel to Erie, Pa. to take on Penn State – Behrend in a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m. inside the Junker Center.
