Men’s Basketball Takes Down Crosstown Rival John Carroll

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball takes down crosstown rival John Carroll University in an Ohio Athletic Conference game by a final score of 101-64 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (10-4, 5-2 OAC) was led by junior All-OAC guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) who scored 22 points and added five rebounds and five assists. Sophomore All-OAC guard Drew Wennes (Huron) contrinuted 20 points and five rebounds. Junior guard Jake Snyder (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) scored 16 points and got six boards.

John Carroll (6-7, 1-5 OAC) was led by freshman forward David Gentry who scored 12 points and senior All-OAC guard Jackson Sartain added 11 points.

The Yellow Jackets came out of the gate on fire. Senior guard Shane Zalba (Mentor) started the game with a steal and layup to get the scoring going. From there BW quickly guarded an 11-4 lead as sophomore forward Christian Pfeiffer (Amherst) followed a missed layup with a layup of his own. The Yellow Jackets keep the lead the entire way as John Carroll tried to claw back into the game. With five minutes left in the half Sartain made a pair of free throws to cut the BW lead down to 2. But the Yellow Jackets rallied with a 10-2 run to regain a double-digit lead. Right before the buzzer Mazzeo hit a last second layup to give BW a 12 point as they went to the locker room. 

The Blue Streaks did not have an answer for the Yellow Jacket defense in the second half. John. Carroll was held to 24 points as they shot 22.2% from the field. BW came out hot again getting the first five points as they went on a 13-3 run. The Yellow Jackets never took their foot off the gas as they continued to rain down shots. BW jumped out to a 30 point lead with 12:30 remaining as junior forward Jackson Simmons (Wadsworth) nailed a corner three. The Yellow Jackets maintained this big lead throughout the rest of the game. With 2:03 remaining in the game senior forward Terrell Hicks (Cuyahoga Falls/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) got open for a layup and put BW up 101-64. Both teams were held scoreless the rest of the way as the Yellow Jackets took home the rivalry win.

BW is back in action on Saturday, January 22th when they the second game of an OAC men's and women's doubleheader against Wilmington College at 4:00 p.m. in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
