Men’s Basketball Wins Thriller vs. St. Mary’s (Md.) in Opening Round of Dan Greene Invitational

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated host St. Mary's College in a thrilling first-round game of the Dan Greene Memorial Invitational by a final score of 75-72 in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.

BW (2-0) will face New Jersey City University in tomorrow's championship game at 3 p.m.   St. Mary's (1-1) will play Spalding (Ky.) University in tomorrow's consolation game at 1 p.m. 


The Yellow Jackets had two players score in double figures led by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Cam Kuhn (Vermilion) as he scored a game-high 24 points.  Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) recorded his 13th career double-double as he scored 19 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.  

The Seahawks had four players score in double figures led by Tre Mouton with a team-high 19 points. Lavonte Sanders tallied a double-double as he scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Ochae Bynum recorded 11 points and Darick Kerns chipped in 10. 

BW opened the first half on an 8-2 run when Fetherolf knocked down a three-pointer at the 16:52 mark.  St. Mary's responded with a 9-4 run to cut the lead down to 12-11 on a layup by Sanders, who missed the free throw to tie the game, at 13:30.    The Yellow Jackets used a 12-5 run to push its lead to 24-16 on a three-pointer from junior forward Mike Kaminski (Medina) at the 7:38 mark.  

The Seahawks answered back with a 14-9 run to cut the lead down to 33-30 on a layup by Donovan Robinson at 1:57. BW outscored St. Mary's, 9-3, down the stretch and led 39-32 at the intermission. 

The Seahawks opened the second half on a 19-6 to take their first lead of the game at 51-45 on a traditional three-point play by Sanders at the 12:23 mark.  The Yellow Jackets answered back with a 12-0 run to regain the lead at 57-51 on three-pointer by Kaminski at 8:55. Sophomore guard Kyle Nader (Vermilion) scored four points during the run. St. Mary's used a 17-11 run to tie the game at 68-68 on Bynum three-pointer at the 1:37 mark. 

BW outscored the Seahawks, 7-4, over the remainder of the game and got all seven points from the charity stripe, including the first four consecutive from sophomore guard Jay Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln).
