Warner’s Career Night Leads BW Men’s Basketball to First OAC Victory

BEREA, Ohio – Junior guard Zach Warner (Clyde) scored a career-high 15 points to lead the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team to a 73-56 Ohio Athletic Conference victory in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center

In addition to Warner for BW (3-2, 1-1 OAC), senior guard Justin Roth (Parma) scored all 14 of his points in the first half before being ejected with 3:20 remaining. Senior All-OAC guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) tallied 12 points, grabbed a career-high eight rebounds and dished out a game-high five assists. Senior forward Matt Dennis (Spring Hill, Fla./Nature Coast Technical) recorded his fourth career double-double as he scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Cameron Kuhn (Vermilion) also contributed 11 points.

Otterbein (1-5, 0-2 OAC) was led by freshman forward Matt Hughes with a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Bryan Mackenzie tallied 11 points while sophomore guard Jake Phillis added 10.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets opened the game on an 11-0 run when Kuhn converted the traditional three-point play at the 16:23 mark. The Cardinals responded with a 12-2 run to cut the lead down to just one point at 13-12 on layup by sophomore forward Bryan Mackenzie at 12:14. BW answered back with an 18-4 run to push the lead to 31-16 when sophomore guard Jaelen Hollinger (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) split a pair from the charity stripe at the 4:58 mark.

Otterbein outscored the Yellow Jackets 10-6 down the stretch, but BW outscored the Cardinals 7-6 after the ejections of Roth and Hollinger at 3:20. The Yellow Jackets took a 39-26 lead into intermission.

In the second half, Otterbein opened the period on a 7-2 run to cut the lead down to 41-33 on a layup by Phillis at the 17:18 mark. BW responded with a 13-5 run to push the lead to 54-38 on pair of free throws by Dennis at 11:08. The Cardinals used an 8-4 run to cut the lead down to 58-46 on a triple by sophomore guard Christian Meister at the 7:56 mark.

The Yellow Jackets outscored Otterbein 15-10 down the stretch to secure its first OAC on the season.

BW is back in action on Saturday, December 6 when it travels to New Concord for an OAC game against Muskingum University at 3 p.m. The next home game is on Wednesday, December 17 when the team hosts Marietta College in an OAC clash in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
