BW Men’s Basketball Slips in OAC Opener to Mount Union

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team opened the Ohio Athletic Conference portion of its schedule as it fell to the University of Mount Union by a final score of 87-75 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (2-2, 0-1 OAC) was led by senior guard Justin Roth (Parma) with a team-high 21 points.  Senior All-OAC guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) scored with 14 while freshman guard Cameron Kuhn (Vermilion) recorded a career-high 13 points.

Mount Union (2-2, 1-0 OAC) was led by senior All-OAC guard Nate Jacubec with a game-high 27 points, including an impressive 18 in the first half.  Sophomore guiard DeAllen Jackson tallied 17, junior forward Jarret Ruffin contributed 12 and junior forward Taylor Moore added 10.

In the first half, the game would go back and forth for the first five minutes and included three times with the last coming at 13-13 on a three-pointer by Roth at 15:00.  The Purple Raiders responded with a 5-0 run to take an 18-13 lead on triple from Jacubec at 14:16.   The Yellow Jackets quickly responded and tied the game back up at 18-18 on a layup by senior forward Reid Crossen (Jeromesville/Hillsdale) at the 13:14 mark.

Over the next three plus minutes, the game would once again go back and forth with three more ties with the last coming at 25-25 on a pair of free throws Kuhn at 10:39.  The Yellow Jackets used a 7-4 run to take a 32-29 lead on layup by sophomore guard Zack Brandy (Hudson) at the 7:00 mark.   Mount Union closed the half out on a 17-4 run to lead 46-36 at the intermission.

In the second half, BW came no closer than eight points at 38-46 on a layup by Roth at the 19:25 mark.   The Purple Raiders led by as many as 21 points on four occasions with the last coming at 82-61 on a three-pointer by JJ Kukura at 3:01.
