Crowe's Game-High Not Enough Against Marietta

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team was defeated by Ohio Athletic Conference leader Marietta College, 86-77, in an OAC game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (4-3, 2-2 OAC) was led by senior All-0AC guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) with a game-high tying 22 points and dished out a game-best tying five assists.  Senior guard Justin Roth (Parma) contributed 18 points and sophomore forward Jake Fetherolf (Norwalk) tallied 10 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Marietta (9-0, 4-0 OAC), who is tied with John Carroll and Mount Union atop the OAC standings, had four players score in double figures led by sophomore point guard Keith Richardson with a game-high tying 22 points and game-best tying five assists.  Senior forward Garrett Stephenson recorded 14 points, junior forward Eddy Grenert contributed 12 and freshman point guard Dillon Young contributed 11.

Over first six plus minutes of the first half, the game was tied four times with the last coming at 13-13 on a pair of free throws by Yellow Jacket sophomore guard Jaelen Hollinger (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) at the 13:25 mark.   The Pioneers responded with a 4-0 run to take a 17-13 lead on a layup by Richardson at 12:46. BW answered with an 8-0 run to take a 21-17 lead on a layup by Roth at the 9:04 mark.

Marietta used an 8-4 run to tie the game for the sixth time at 25-25 on three-pointer by Richardson at 5:40.   The Pioneers outscored BW 15-11 down the stretch to lead 40-36 at the intermission.  

Marietta opened the second half on a 7-3 run to push the lead to 47-39 on a layup by junior guard RaNeal Ewing at the 18:33 mark.  The Yellow Jackets responded with a 4-0 run to cut the lead down to 47-43 on a pair of free throws by freshman guard Cameron Kuhn (Vermilion) at 17:05.  Marietta answered with a 6-0 run to take a 10-point lead at 53-43 on a layup by Andy Stegman at the 14:45 mark.

The Yellow Jackets responded with a 9-0 run to cut the lead down to 53-52 on a layup by Hollinger at 12:46.   During the run, Crowe converted a four-point play (three-pointer and foul shot) and sophomore guard Zach Brandy (Hudson) knocked down a triple.

The Pioneers used a 15-4 run to push their lead to 68-57 on a three-pointer by junior guard Luis Garcia at the 8:52 mark.   After Marietta pushed the lead to a game-high 12 points at 75-63, BW countered with a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to 75-69 on a layup by Kuhn at 4:05.  Roth accounted for three points, an assist and steal during the run.

Marietta extended the lead to 80-72 when Richardson split a pair from the charity stripe with 43 seconds remaining.   Crowe cut the lead to 80-75 when he knocked down his fourth three-pointer at 40 seconds.   Neal made two free throws to give the Pioneers the 82-75 lead with 36 seconds left.  Crowe once again cut the lead down to five points at 82-77 on a layup at 30 seconds.   The Pioneers scored the final four points to secure the 86-77 victory.
