BW Men’s Hoops Team Wins at Capital, 79-71

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior guard Justin Roth (Parma) scored 21 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University, 79-71, in an OAC game in the Capital Center.  This was the final regular season game. The 2015 OAC Tournament begins next Tuesday, February 24.

Keys to the win for BW included making 31 of 56 shots from the floor for 55.4 percent, including 12 of 22 three-pointers for 54.5%. BW also outrebounded the Crusaders, 39-23.

In addition to Roth for BW (18-8, 11-7 OAC), senior All-OAC guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) scored 16 points and freshman guard Cameron Kuhn (Vermilion) added 15. The Yellow Jackets open OAC Tournament action with a home game on Tuesday at 8 p.m. against a yet to be determined opponent. It will be the nightcap of a women's and men's doubleheader in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea. The women open play at 6 p.m. against a yet to be determined opponent.

Capital (8-17, 6-12 OAC) was led by senior forward Ben Danhoff with 12 points and three rebounds.

In the first half, Capital opened an early, 8-4 lead at 16:02 when sophomore guard Curt Geise made a layup off of a fast break. The Yellow Jackets went on a 13-2 run to take a 17-10 lead at 13:08 when Crowe nailed a jump shot.

The BW lead grew to 15 points on three occasions as the Jackets outscored the Crusaders 26-16 to build a 43-26 advantage at 2:17 when Roth canned the third of his five first half three-pointers. The largest lead was 47-27 at 1:09 when Roth canned another triple. The Yellow Jackets led 47-30 at halftime, including making 9 of 11 three-pointers.

In the second half, BW continued its assault and went on a 21-19 run to build a 68-49 lead when Roth canned a triple at 8:53. Capital responded with a 22-11 run to cut the lead to 79-71 with 24 seconds remaining when freshman guard Jacke Gedeon made a layup, was fouled, and made the free throw for the three-point play.

The 2015 OAC men's and women's basketball tournaments are set up in two separate and different formats.

The men's tourney begins on Tuesday with the quarter finals, the semifinals are on Thursday, Feb. 26 and the Championship Game is on Saturday. For more information on the 2015 OAC Tournament, please visit the OAC web site at www.oac.org.

Heading into the OAC tournament,
is only 17 points shy of reaching the Yellow Jacket 1,000-Point Club as he currently sits at 983.

The women's tourney involves a double-bye system with the top two seeds, No.1 Ohio Northern University and No.2 John Carroll University not playing until Thursday's semifinals.
