Football Wins Second Straight Game with OAC Victory Over Wilmington on Homecoming

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University football team won its second straight game with an 38-21 Ohio Athletic Conference and Homecoming victory over Wilmington College in on Tressel Field inside George Finnie Stadium.

BW (3-2, 2-2 OAC), who won back-to-back OAC games for the first time since the 2016 season when it won five straight, improved to 16-3 all-time vs. Wilmington (2-3, 1-3 OAC), including winning the last nine meetings.   The Quakers dropped its second straight game to a Cleveland area opponent.

The Yellow Jacket offense was led by junior quarterback Jake Hudson (East Lake, Fla.) as he accounted for 345 of the season-high 517 yards.  Hudson completed 17 of 25 passes for 278 yards with four touchdowns . Senior All-OAC running back Austin Smith (Broadview Heights/North Royalton) rushed for 89 yards on 17 carries and caught one pass for 71 yards. Sophomore wide receiver Deion Greer (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic), who was the Frank Ropollo Player of the Game, led the receiving corps with four catches for 55 yards with a career-high two touchdowns and one two-point conversion.  Defensively, All-OAC linebacker Sam Groff (Waynesburg/Sandy Valley) recorded a game-high 12 tackles, including two for a loss. 

The Wilmington offensive attack was led by senior quarterback Luke Creditt as he completed 22 of 34 passes for 217 yards with three touchdowns.  Senior running back Eric Flynn, Jr.  rushed for 70 yards on 16 carries. Freshman wide receiver Ameer Jackson caught eight passes for 91 yards with one touchdown.  Defensively, freshman defensive back Leroy Wilson made 11 stops.

In the first quarter, BW scored the only points to take a 3-0 lead when freshman kicker Brandon Vollmer (Pickerington/Central) converted the 27-yard field goal at the 4:12 mark.

The Yellow Jackets added to their lead at 9-0 when Hudson connected with junior wide receiver Ty Gallo (Brooklyn Heights/Cuyahoga Heights) on a 27-yard pass play.  Vollmer missed the extra point.  The Quakers scored their only points of the first half and cut the lead down to 9-7 when Credit hooked up with freshman wide receiver Ameer Jackson on a nine-yard pass play at 1:47. Freshman kicker Kevin Shamp added the extra point.

Wilmington took the lead at 14-9 when Creditt found sophomore wide receiver A.J. Hightower for a three-yard pass play at the 7:33 mark.  Shamp tacked on the extra point.  BW regained the lead at 17-14 when sophomore wide out Deion Greer (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) took a four-yard shovel pass from Hudson at 5:39. Hudson hit Greer for the two-point conversion.

The Yellow Jackets added to its lead at 24-14 when junior quarterback Matt Lowry (Rocky River) rushed out of the wildcat for a seven-yard touchdown at 14:53 of the fourth quarter.  BW extended its lead at 31-14 when Greer took the Hudson pass 48-yards to pay dirt at 13:04.   Vollmer added both extra points.   The Quakers responded and cut the lead down to 31-21 when Flynn, Jr. caught a five-yard scoring pass from Creditt at the 10:54 mark.  Shamp added the point after attempt.  The Yellow Jackets came right back and extended their lead to 38-21 when junior wide receiver Jordan Leverette (Cleveland/John Adams) caught a 19-yard pass from Hudson at 9:39. Vollmer tacked on the extra point.

BW is back in action on Saturday, October 14 when it travels to New Concord for an OAC game against Muskingum University inside McConagha Stadium at 1:30 p.m.

The next Yellow Jacket home game is on Saturday, October 28 when they host an OAC game against Capital University in the Finnie Stadium at 1:30 p.m.
