Football Upended by #2 Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University football team was fell to No. 2-nationally ranked the University of Mount Union by a final score of 55-7 in an Ohio Athletic Conference showdown inside Mount Union Stadium. 

Mount Union (3-0, 2-0 OAC), who has only allowed 10 points this season, improved to 34-21-1 in the all-time series, including winning the last 23 games.

BW (1-2, 0-2 OAC) was led by junior quarterback Jake Hudson (East Lake, Fla.) as he completed nine of 23 passes for 72 yards.  Freshman running back TyQuan McCray (Rock Hill, S.C/York)  led the ground attack as he rushed for 39yards on 12 carries.  Sophomore wide receiver Deion Greer (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) led the receiving corps with 35 yards on three catches.  Defensively, senior defensive back Trypp Washington (Eatonville, Fla./Orlando First Academy) had eight tackles, including six solo.

The Purple Raider air attack was led by sophomore quarterback D'Angelo Fulford as he completed 10 of 12 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns.  Freshman running back Josh Petruccelli led all rushers with 127 yards on 13 carries while junior running back Jawanza Evans-Morris had 102 yards on eight carries with two TDs.  Sophomore wide out Justin Hill led the receivers with three catches for 62 yards and one TD.  Defensively, senior linebacker and junior defensive back Austin White each had a game-high tying nine tackles.

In the first quarter, Mount Union scored three times to take a 20-0 lead.  Fulford connected with senior wide receiver Jared Ruth on a 65-yard touchdown play and hit senior wide out Braeden Friss on an 11-yard TD.  Ruth rushed for eight yards for the final score. Senior kicker Alex Louthan added two extra points but the final Purple Raiders went for two on the final touchdown and the pass play failed.

The Purple Raiders scored the only points of the second quarter to extend their lead to 27-0.  Fulford hooked up with Friss on a 22-yard pass play with 47 seconds left in the first half.  Louthan tacked on the extra-point. 

In the third quarter, Mount Union scored two times to push its lead to 41-0. Evans-Morris found the end zone on an 11-yard rush.  Hill caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Robert Powell.  Louthan converted both extra points.

The Purple Raiders extended their lead to 48-0 when Evans-Morris scored his second half touchdown as he darted 55-yards to pay dirt and Louthan added the extra point.  The Yellow Jackets scored their only points of the game when freshman defensive back Marquis Whitting (East Cleveland/Shaw) forced a fumble then junior defensive back Jacob Boyd (Kirtland) recovered the loose ball and  returned eight yards for the score.   Freshman Brandon Vollmer (Pickerington/Central)  added the extra point.  Mount Union closed out the scoring when sophomore running back Gerrett Choat scored on a four-yard run. Louthan tacked on the extra point to push the score to 55-7. 

BW returns to action on Saturday, September 30 when it hosts an OAC game against Marietta College in the 40th Lee Tressel Shrine Classic on the Tressel Field inside Finnie Stadium at 1:30 p.m.
