Football Team Falls to Muskingum, 14-13

BEREA, Ohio –  Sophomore quarterback Jake Hudson (East Lake, Fla.) passed for 166 yards and a touchdown and ran for a game-high 80 yards, but the Baldwin Wallace University football team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum University, 14-13, before 2,756 fans on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium.

 The Yellow Jackets led 7-0 after one quarter, 10-0 at halftime and 13-7 after three periods. BW (2-4 1-4 OAC) outgunned Muskingum (3-3, 2-3 OAC) 321-242 in total yards, but the Fighting Muskies closed the gap in the all-time series with BW now leading 45-13-2 overall. The win was Muskingum's first versus BW in its last 11 meetings with the Yellow Jackets.

Hudson completed 17 of 30 passes for 166 yards with one TD and one interception. He also ran for 80 yards in 15 attempts. The top receiver was senior flanker Trevor George (Aliquippa, Pa./ Carlyton) with five catches for 33 yards. Sophomore WR Chad Steinwachs (Buffalo, N.Y./ Williamsville South) had four grabs for 30 yards. The BW defense was led by junior outside linebacker Sam Groff (Waynesburg/Sandy Valley) with 10 tackles.

For Muskingum, senior QB Griffin Wegener completed 11 of 19 passes for 61 yards with an interception. The running game was led by senior Jordan Scanlon with 16 carries for 66 yards. The receiving corps were led by junior WR Damon Jones with four catches for 36 yards. On defense, free safety Jakob Yost had a team-high 10 stops.

In the first period, BW took a 7-0 lead at 7:07 when Hudson made a perfect fake and then threw to a wide open senior WR Tyler Wolf (Fremont/Ross) with the catch-and-run good for a 41-yard TD. Senior two-time Academic All-OAC placekicker Joe Simonis (Hinckley/Medina Highland) added the PAT kick to complete a 7-play and 76-yard drive.

In the second quarter, BW extended its lead to 10-0 at 9:53 when Simonis booted a 38-yard field goal to end a 16-play and 72-yard drive that began on the Jacket 7-yard line.

In the third quarter, Simonis increased BW's lead to 13-0 when he drilled a 39-yard field goal at 9:32 to end a 12-play and 43-yard drive. Muskingum got on the scoreboard when Wegener ran into the end zone from one yard away on a fourth-and-one situation at 2:46. Cody Dent added the AT to complete a 15-play and 75-yard drive.

In the fourth quarter, the Fighting Muskies earned a 14-13 lead at 4:51 when sophomore RB Warren Wilson ran one yard to the end zone to end a 9-play and 75-yard . Dent's PAT kick provided the lead. The big play on the drive was a 37-yard option run by Wegener where he broke numerous tackles.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, October 22 when they host Otterbein University on Homecoming at Finnie Stadium at 2 p.m.
