BEREA, Ohio – Senior quarterback Tyler Moeglin (Canton/ Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas) completed 17 of 19 passes and two touchdowns and ran for a career-high 150 yards and two TD's as the Baldwin Wallace University (6-2, 6-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference) football team won its fifth straight game and defeated OAC rival Capital University (2-6, 2-5 OAC) by a 56-20 count on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium on both Professor Appreciation Day and CoSIDA Academic All-America Day. With its win, BW leads 36-11, including four straight wins, in the all-time series that dates back to 1928.
BW led 7-0 after one quarter, 28-6 at halftime and 42-6 after three periods. The Yellow Jackets had a 568-366 advantage in total yards, including a 383-215 advantage on the ground.
For BW, Moeglin completed 17 of 19 passes for 185 yards with two TD's and no interceptions. Moeglin also led the Yellow Jackets on the ground with 150 yards in 11 attempts and two more TD's. Sophomore running back Austin Smith (Broadview Hts./ North Royalton) ran for 104 yards in five attempts with a TD yards and a TD. The receiving corps were led by junior wide receiver Trevor George (Aliquippa, Pa./ Carlyton) with five grabs for 20 yards. The Yellow Jacket defense was led by junior end Andy Schultz (North Royalton) with a career-high 11 tackles, including three for loss and a quarterback sack.
For Capital, sophomore QB's Nick Iske and Zak Sheridan combined to complete 13 of 17 passes for 151 yards and two TD's. The running game was led by sophomore RB Isaiah Lyle with yards in 17 attempts. The receiving corps was led by freshman WR Eddie Preciado with four grabs for59 yards and a TD. The Crusaders were led on defense by freshman strong safety J.R. Garrigo with six tackles.
In the first quarter, BW jumped out to 7-0 lead at 12:05 when it sped 65 yards on six plays in its opening possession with Moeglin raced 11 yards to the endzone for the touchdown. Junior Academic All-OAC placekicker Joe Simonis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) added the PAT kick. Following a 47-yard kickoff return, Capital made it 7-3 when sophomore Jack Johns booted a 19-yard field goal at 8:42.
In the second quarter, BW increased its lead to 14-3 at 10:11 when Reed ran one yard to the endzone to complete a 10-play and 65-yard drive. Simonis was good on his second straight PAT boot. The lead grew to 21-3 at 6:10 when Moeglin tossed a 34-yard TD pass to junior wide receiver Tommy Fuller (Lakewood) to end a 4-play and 68-yard drive. Somonis added his third PAT.
Capital drew closer at 21-6 with 39 seconds left before the intermission when Johns made a 32-yard field goal. But BW wasn't done yet. After Capital tried to squib kick that the Yellow Jackets covered at their own 34-yard line, Moeglin moved his team 66 yards in three plays and added his second TD pass – a 21-yarder to junior WR Mike Waggoner (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) to make it 28-6. Simonis also had his fourth PAT kick. In the first half, Moeglin was a perfect 13 of 13 passing.
In the third quarter, following a Crusader turnover, BW made it 35-6 at 8:11 when sophomore RB Adam Blake (Alliance/ Marlington) took a direct snap and bulled into the endzone from one yard away. Simonis' fifth PAT completed an 8-play and 69-yard drive. BW extended its lead to 42-6 at 4:19 when Moeglin galloped 17 yards for his second rushing TD to end a 5-play and 52-yard drive. Simonis was perfect on his sixth straight PAT.
On the second play of the fourth quarter, Smith busted through the Crusader line and sped 58 yards to the endzone at 14:19 and BW led, 49-0. Simonis made his seventh consecutive PAT. Capital made it 49-13 at 6:35 when Iske passed 14 yards to senior tight end Jake Skelton for a TD and Johns added the PAT.
BW came right back and scored 17 seconds later and on the first play of its drive when Blake bolted 68 yards to paydirt and Simonis added his eighth PAT boot of the contest. The Crusaders scored the final TD when Sheridan threw 13 yards to Preciado at 3:25 to make it 56-20.
The Yellow Jackets return to action next Saturday, November 7 when BW travels to Alliance, Ohio to play OAC rival and No.1-ranked University of Mount Union at Mt. Union Stadium at 1:30 p.m. The final home game is on Saturday, Nov. 14 when BW hosts OAC rival Heidelberg at Finnie Stadium on Seniors' & Parents' Day at 1:30 p.m.
