No. 11 Baseball Drops Non-Conference Game to Allegheny (Pa.)

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The No. 11 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team was on the road to face Allegheny (Pa.) College in a non-conference game on the Robertson Baseball Field. Despite BW (13-2) hitting two deep, the Gators (9-4) tallied three homeruns themselves as the Yellow Jackets fell by an 11-5 final score.

BW was led by senior left fielder Bijan Kamalipour (Frisco, Texas/Jesuit College Preparatory School) as he hit 1-3 with two RBIs, freshman second baseman Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) as he went 2-3 with a run, a double, and an RBI, and senior All-Mideast Region shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) as he hit 2-4 with two runs and a double.

Scoring Plays

  • Allegheny got the jump in the bottom of the first inning, driving in three runs off one-run and two-run singles (3-0 Gators)
  • In the bottom of the second, a grand slam homerun by the Gators earned them the 7-0 lead
  • BW got on the board on a two-run double by Kamalipour to score Kolenich and Ludwick
  • The Yellow Jackets tallied another run in the fifth on a one-run double to right center field by Kolenich
  • In the bottom of the inning, the Gators responded with a two-run homerun over the right field fence (9-3 Allegheny)
  • Solo homeruns by junior utility player Andrew Parker (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) and junior centerfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate) gave the Yellow Jackets some energy in the top of the sixth (9-5 Gators)
  • The Gators responded again with another homerun of their own, making it 11-5
  • A scoreless remaining 2.5 innings from either team clinched the win for Allegheny

On the Mound

  • Sophomore right hander Brendon Hink (Poland/Neshannock, Pa.) started on the mound faced six batters, allowing three runs on three hits
  • Senior right hander Steve Spidell (Mount Eaton/Waynedale) relieved, facing five batters and allowed three runs on one hit, and walked two batters
  • Junior right hander Matt Sabin (Mentor) also relieved, throwing 4.1 innings, and allowed four runs on six hits, but posted five strikeouts
  • Junior right hander Ethan Boyko (North Royalton) faced just three batters for a strikeout and allowed no runs and no hits
  • Senior All-OAC right hander Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) pitched the seventh and the eighth, allowing no runs on two hits, and struck out two batters

BW returns to play this Saturday, March 26 as the Yellow Jackets start Ohio Athletic Conference play. BW will travel to Wilmington College to take on the Fightin' Quakers in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. on Tewsbury-Delaney Field.
