Baseball Team Defeats Bluffton, 3-1
PORT CHARLOTTE, FLORIDA – The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated Bluffton University, 3-1 today (Thursday, March 8, 2012) on the sixth day of its annual Spring Break trip at the Snowbird Baseball Classic. The Yellow Jackets have won seven of their last eight games.
With its win, B-W improves to 7-2 overall, while Bluffton falls to 2-6 overall.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board first in the fifth inning by scoring three runs. The Beavers answered in the sixth with a run to cut the B-W lead to 3-1, which turned out to be the only scoring in the game.
Senior right-hander Josh Scott (Strongsville) started on the mound for B-W and threw six strong innings, allowing one run (earned) on five hits while walking just two and striking out six. In relief, sophomore Cory Waite (Willoughby/South), senior Bill Bostelman (Marion/Harding) and junior Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) combined to throw the last three innings giving up zero runs and only one hit. Tenley earned his first save of the season as he pitched the final frame.
At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore second basemen Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) and freshman Eric Murphy (Brook Park/Midpark) as they each recorded two hits in the game. In the fifth inning, Gugliotta scored a run, while Murphy drove one a run in.
B-W returns to action tomorrow, March 9, 2012, when it plays Medaille (N.Y.) College in a single, nine-inning game at 3:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets are playing eight varsity and four junior varsity games in seven days in the Sunshine State. B-W's first home game is on Wednesday, April 4, against nonleague and cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at Heritage Field in Berea at 4 p.m.
