Baldwin Wallace's Melanie Winters earns four All-America honors: Local College Insider

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Baldwin Wallace junior Melanie Winters didn't win at the NCAA Division III track championships last week, but she did set a precedent. She became the first BW athlete to earn four All-America honors in one meet.

Winters, featured by The Plain Dealer last week, placed third in the long jump, fourth in the high jump, fifth in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 100 hurdles at the national meet in Canton, New York. She and thrower Kim Gallavan led BW to a eighth-place team finish.

Winters scored 18 of BW's 24 points. Her marks were 19-13/4 in the long jump, 5-61/2 in the high jump, a school-record 24.42 seconds in the 200, and 14.19 in the hurdles.

Winters also qualified in the heptathlon (seven events), but chose to concentrate on the individual events instead. The Stow High grad now has seven All-America honors in her career, including a second-place finish in the indoor pentathlon last winter, and is the most celebrated women's track athlete in BW history.

Gallavan, of Auburn Township, was third in the discus (160-4).

Joey Davis loses to Alex Dieringer: Three-time NCAA Division II wrestling champion Joey Davis of Notre Dame College lost an exhibition match to reigning Division I champ Alex Dieringer of Oklahoma State, 9-0, last week in New York.

Their 180-pound challenge match was a warmup act for "Salsa in the Square," which featured Team USA vs. Cuba in Times Square.

Both wrestlers were juniors. The loss won't count toward Davis' 110-0 career record. Dieringer is a two-time NCAA champ.

Mount men win: Mount Union won its second consecutive men's 4x400-meter relay title at the NCAA Division III championships. Tyler Mettille, Chase Swisher, Tyler Sparks and Tyler Neff clocked a season-best 3:10.68.

UMU senior Courtney Reese of Cleveland placed sixth in the 400 and finished her career with five All-American honors.

NDC's Coleman All-America: Notre Dame College's Kelsey Coleman is the school's first NCAA Division II softball All-American. The senior outfielder from Field High was named to the Daktronics/Division II CCA All-America Team.

JCU's Doring All-America: John Carroll senior right-hander Drew Doring was named second-team All-America by ABCA/Rawlings and D3baseball.com.

LEC lacrosse standout honored: Lake Erie College's Justin Goodwin was named Division II Outstanding Defensive Player by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA).

Goodwin, from Westminster, British Columbia, earned several postseason awards, including USILA Scholar All-American. He led LEC to a No. 1 ranking during the season, and the Storm finished 15-3 after falling in the NCAA Division II semifinals to eventual champion Limestone College.

Len Barker still rolling: Notre Dame College posted its first back-to-back winning seasons under former Indians pitcher Len Barker, who took over as head coach before the 2012 season. The Falcons were 25-19 this season, 27-22 last year. They won 10 and 16 games his first two years.

Barker threw a perfect game for the Indians on May 15, 1981.

BW top athletes: Baseball All-American first baseman Kyle Chontos of Pickerington and basketball standout Audrey Smolik were named Baldwin Wallace's top male and female student-athletes.
