A star might be emerging at Baldwin Wallace, and he’s just a sophomore.

It didn’t take long for Vermilion graduate Cameron Kuhn to make a splash.

Last season as freshman, Kuhn was named Co-Ohio Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year after averaging 14 points.

What he accomplished on Dec. 2 might take it to a different level.

Kuhn was already off to a solid start for the Yellow Jackets, averaging 18.2 points through the team’s first five games.

Against host Mount Union on Dec. 2, Kuhn was off the charts with a school-record 51 points in a 110-109 double-overtime loss to the Purple Raiders.

“I honestly had no idea I was having that kind of night. No idea,” said Kuhn.

The reality sank in when Kuhn glanced at the stat sheet.

“The loss was the worst part, but I was amazed when I saw the stat sheet,” said Kuhn.

His stat line:

* 17 of 26 from the field; 9 of 13 from 3-point range; 8 of 9 from the free-throw line; 51 points.

With the breakout game, Kuhn’s season average jumped from 18.2 points to an OAC-leading 23.7.

Prior to Dec. 2, Kuhn had scoring games of 13, 28, 19, 18 and 13 points.

Kuhn’s 51 points broke the school’s 54-year-old record of 47 set by Bob Walters in 1961.

“My coaches told me about (the school record) in the locker room and that was very surprising,” said Kuhn. “I’m just a blessed young man. The coaches and my teammates are great. It’s a great environment here (at BW). The coaches trust me and I trust myself.”

It would seem Kuhn has a knack for breaking old records.

As a Vermilion senior, Kuhn set the Sailors career scoring record, ending with 1,577 points to break the record set by John Halley in 1965. That same year, 2014, Kuhn was named the Lorain County “Mr. Basketball.”

The 50-point single-game mark has always been a magical one, but Kuhn admits he had not given it much thought – until Dec. 2.

His previous career high was 41 points two seasons ago as a high school senior in a regional semifinal.

At 4-2 to start the season, Kuhn hopes, even with the loss to nationally ranked Mount Union, the Yellow Jackets can use the game as a springboard to another successful season. In 2014-15, BW was 18-9.

Just a sophomore, Kuhn said he has no problems taking an expanded role in leadership. As for one day possibly topping his school record 51 points, Kuhn wouldn’t go there.

“I’m not sure I’ve got another 50-point game in me but I’m pretty sure I’m going to get points.”
