Six BW Track and Field Student-Athletes to Compete at NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams will send six student-athletes to this week's NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships on Thursday, May 28 until Saturday, May 28 hosted by Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.

The top eight finishers in each event earn All-American honors.  The top 20 male and top 22 female times/marks in each event along top 16 relay teams in the nation have qualified for the meet. 

The BW women's squad, who was the 2016 NCAA Division III Indoor National Champions, is ranked sixth in the nation heading into the championships and will have five competing this week.   The Yellow Jacket men will have one member competing this week.

Headlining the group is senior five-time outdoor multi-event All-American Melanie Winters (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) as she has qualified in five events.  Winters is second in the nation in the high jump with a mark of five feet and seven and three-quarter inches (Friday, 3:30 p.m.).  She is third in the 100-meter hurdles with an All-Ohio Championship-record time of 14.02 (Friday prelims, 5:30 p.m.) and third in the long jump with an Ohio Athletic Conference-record and school-record mark of 19'11" (Thursday, 3:30 p.m.).  Winters ranks seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.51 (Thursday prelims, 5:45 p.m.) and is 18th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.06 (Friday prelims, 6:30 pm).  She was the 2016 indoor national champion in the long jump and is a five-time indoor All-American. 

Senior All-American outdoor thrower Kim Gallavan (Auburn Township/Kenston) has qualified in the discus, hammer throw and shot put.   Gallavan, who was hampered by an injury most of the season, qualified for all three events in the final two weeks of competition.   She is second in the nation in the hammer throw with a BW-record mark of 187'1" (Saturday, 12:30 pm).  Gallavan is ninth in the discuss with a mark of 155'7" (Thursday, 3:30 pm) after she took third in the event at last year's championships.   Gallavan is 14th in the shot put with a mark of 45'1.75" (Friday, 1:00 p.m.).   She was the 2016 indoor national champion in the shot put and weight throw and is a three-time indoor All-American.

Senior OAC Champion thrower Maggey Urban (Cleveland/St. Joseph Academy) qualifies for her third straight national meet in the hammer throw.  Urban finished 20th at last year's meet.   She is 10th in the nation with an OAC-record mark of 178'6" (Saturday, 12:30 p.m.).   Urban was the 2016 OAC Guido Ricevutto Co-Most Outstanding Field Athlete.

Junior OAC Champion thrower Kasey Clouse (Norwalk/Western Reserve) is making her first trip to the national meet as she has qualified in the discus.  Clouse is 18th in the nation with a career-best mark of 148'9" (Thursday, 3:30 p.m.).   She is a two-time All-OAC outdoor performer and won this year's OAC title in the discus.  Clouse is also an All-OAC indoor performer in the weight throw. 

Junior All-OAC jumper Erin Kasper (Amherst/Marion Steele) is making her first trip to the national meet as she has qualified in the high jump.   Kasper is 21st in the nation with a career-best mark of 5'6" (Friday, 3:30 p.m.).   She is an All-OAC outdoor performer in the high jump and a two-time All-OAC indoor performer in the high jump.   Kasper earned her first indoor All-American honor in the high jump at this year's national meet.   

Senior OAC Champion thrower Tyler Burdorff (Painesville/Riverside) is making is his third straight trip to the national meet as he has qualified in the hammer throw.  Burdorff, who placed 16th at last year's meet, is seventh in the nation with a mark of 192'10" (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.).  He is a three-time OAC outdoor champion, a five-time outdoor All-OAC performer and was the 2016 OAC Sparky Adams Most Outstanding Outdoor Field Athlete.  Burdorff earned his first indoor All-American accolade as he was the runner-up in the weight throw at this year's indoor championships.  He was also the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Great Lakes Regional Indoor Field Athlete of the Year and a two-time USTFCCCA All-Great Lakes Region indoor performer.
